Belief as a system

Euan Semple has raised the prospect of the opportunity and need for a new religion, in the post-industrial age of the web.

My perspective is that religion is a system of shared belief, generally embellished with dogma and ritual. Like any other system, a religion has boundaries and overlaps – due to commonality of roots, or other ‘devotional’ elements.

However, before embarking on the journey towards a ‘new’ religion, I thoroughly recommend reading about Pirsig’s metaphysics of quality (as outlined in Zen and the art of motorcycle maintenance/ Lila) for a better understanding of belief ‘systems.’

I think the internet is just allowing people to sample all religions.

You’ll just get a mass of ‘personal religions’ as opposed to a new religious organisation; which surely the internet has destroyed instead of allowed the opportunity to start a new one?
